Earlier this year, we launched an eco-textile line in collaboration TENCEL™ Luxe (which will be on sale later this year to the public) but did you know why we decided to pursue this new area of business? One word, IMPACT. With its huge environmental impact through waste, water consumption, chemical use, greenhouse gas emissions, soil degradation and rainforest destruction, the fashion industry remains a top polluter. Textiles matter to everyone as long as we wear clothes! And we want to make a positive difference in this area.⁣⁣

Our three beautiful ambassadors for #Oscars2020 (pictured here with our CEO @iam_samata) Kaitlyn Dever, Lea Seydoux, and Elena Andreicheva stunned the red carpet crowds with custom made gowns (swipe to see) with the launched Tencel fabrics. The designers were Louise Vuitton (for Dever and Seydoux) and Laura Basci (for Andreicheva). These are also the same fabrics that our 2020 design contest entrants have to choose from when designing their sketches. Just how sustainable is it to shop from vintage and charity shops? For starters, they are a healthy, ethical alternative to the throwaway culture, and they provide quality finds to consumers at an affordable price. ⁣
🍃⁣
In addition, there is a sense of fulfilment as the costs are directed to a range of social causes. In 2017, in the UK alone, the charity retail contributed over £295m to charitable causes (via @traid), and employed 23,000 staff in both stable and sustainable jobs. This includes young people gaining skills to work in the charity sector and leaving the welfare system to ease the burden on the public purse. ⁣
🍃⁣
Keeping the clothes in use also significantly reduces waste and carbon emissions, plus saves local authorities a whopping £28m of Landfill Tax. With so much goodness coming from this sector, is there much of a take-up from the general population? ⁣

Reports from @greenpeace reveal that each person in the UK (the epicentre of fast fashion) buys an estimated 26.7kg of clothing every year, compared to an average 15.6kg for people across Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden. This roughly translates to 115 items of clothing for each person, but 30% of them have not even been worn in the last 12 months! If this is within UK alone, do we even want to know the figures around the world? ⁣

With this kind of mindless consumption, comes a staggering growth in textile waste. Are fashion items then just another type of single-use plastic? ⁣

To combat these growing concerns, registered UK charity, The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) recently released the Sustainable Clothing Action Plan (SCAP) 2020 commitment - a collaborative framework to deliver industry-led targets for reducing the use of resources in the clothing industry. So far over 80 organisations across the UK have made a pledge to hit industry-led targets through the SCAP 2020 Commitment. While this is endearing, there is so much more to be done in this space on a global scale. ⁣

The magnitude of damage caused by toxic chemicals

The magnitude of damage caused by toxic chemicals in fast fashion is shocking! There are four distinct pillars hugely affected: Consumers, Garment Workers, the Community living around the manufacturing facilities, and the Environment that we all live in. ⁣
🍃⁣
Regulating this space is complex and varies from country to country. It's not uncommon for some toxic chemicals to go totally unregulated!⁣
🍃⁣
As consumers, we can often feel powerless in this situation but the smallest of actions do play a part. Researching brands before purchasing, buying second hand or vintage, and reducing our overall consumption all help. In an interview with @goop, eco-fashion advocate @MarciZaroff said that the worst and most hazardous chemicals are used in conventional textiles, so buying certified GOTS, Cradle to Cradle, and/or OEKO-TEX are the best ways to take action. Another tip she suggests is to encourage our favourite brands and retailers to build chemical reduction strategies, especially in their dyeing and processing supply chains. ⁣

Wading through some uncertain times and thinking about how the Oscars next year is going to look like! As a little pick me up, we are looking through our past campaigns and wanted to shine a spotlight on this exquisite gown custom-made by @louisvuitton for the gorgeous @kaitlyndever for #Oscars2020. The stunning red gown is made of ethical and eco-responsible certified silk satin, embroidered with Swarovski crystals and glass beads. ⁣

This is the second consecutive year Louis Vuitton has partnered with RCGD, and it is with partners like Vuitton and TENCEL™ Luxe, that we are able to turn red carpet “moments” into “movements”, bringing sustainable designs to the forefront of conversation and action within the fashion industry!

The fashion industry is the second largest polluta

The fashion industry is the second largest pollutant in the world right after the oil and gas industry. It’s notoriously difficult to pin down exactly how large fashion’s impact is. From the water and carbon footprint, to the toxic chemicals and dyes, to endangering wildlife and vegetation, the effects are grave and the climate change impact will increase significantly by 2030 if there is no change. ⁣
🍃⁣
As inhabitants of the fragile eco-system, we don't need to be more overwhelmed by staggering statistics. But, we need to be part of the solution and help flatten the curve. ⁣
🍃⁣
There is strength in numbers. When we understand the cycle and how fashion impacts the environment, we can create change. The supply comes from demand, so the biggest contribution we can make is reduced consumption. If we need to buy, we should research sustainable brands and support those who are transparent in their supply chain and adopt waste reduction initiatives. Secondly, we have to find ways to extend the lifecycle of our clothing, to break the vicious cycle of impulse shopping. What are some of the other ways you can think of? ⁣

Let's get down to the roots, shall we? Fibers form the basis of the fashion industry – without fibers we have no textiles, and without textiles we have no fashion industry. The global eco fiber market size is growing, with natural eco fibers the second largest segment – accounting for 22.6% of the global market.⁣
🍃⁣
However, generally, it has proven very hard for clothing brands to trace the fiber origin of their textiles. As our CEO @IAm_Samata said in an interview earlier this year, only a tiny percentage of the leading fashion brands are capable of tracking their garments back to the fiber origin. ⁣
🍃⁣
Global nonprofit organisation, @TextileExchange states that a typical supply chain from fiber to final garment can have up to seven players across the globe (this number increases if certain processes are subcontracted, e.g. for dyeing, printing, laundry or embroidery). ⁣
🍃⁣
The primary form of traceability is through stringent certification standards, where members of the supply chain are subject to 3rd party inspection to verify that the organic fibre is in the final product. However, this is an onerous process and not one where all sustainable fashion brands (even with the best of intention) can afford. A less expensive way of traceability, especially for smaller scale sustainable brands, would be to work closely with both farming and artisan communities at every stage of production, to verify the fiber origins within whatever means possible. Despite challenges, traceability remains a critical process to retain consumer confidence. ⁣

In a world where 2.2. billion people still don't have access to clean drinking water, the fashion industry consumes on average 79 billion cubic meters of water annually — enough to fill 32 million Olympic-size swimming pools! This staggering figure is expected to rise to 50%, by 2030 and it is plain to see why. A single cotton t-shirt takes 2,720 litres of water (as much as you’d drink over a three-year period), and a pair of jeans, almost 10,000 litres of water! ⁣
🍃⁣
The issue is not just confined to the usage of water, but also the emissions of harmful pollutants and chemicals as run off into the waters. ⁣
🍃⁣
Water is the basis for human life and nothing is worth the sacrifice of clean, drinking water. Here are some tips to conserve our most precious resource:

✅ Reduce individual consumption ⁣
✅ Switch to natural fabrics like hemp, linen, bamboo, and monocel. Organic cotton is another alternative but cotton is a very thirsty crop! ⁣
✅ Wash less often to extend the lifecycle of your clothing and to reduce harmful microfibres getting into urban drainage, and eventually our oceans!⁣
✅ Seek out brands that are transparent about their dyes. Support those that use waterless dyeing and low-impact dyes if you can, as they help reduce the pollution of waterways.⁣

All business sectors in Bangladesh are affected by

All business sectors in Bangladesh are affected by the global pandemic, but the garment industry is the hardest hit with 4.5 million garment workers, of whom 65% are women. Many of them have reported that their factories have been shut down indefinitely and workers were given only 23 days of salary as severance. Some factories have closed without giving any payments to workers.⁣

During these challenging times, the Awaj Foundation has been a guiding force for thousands of garment workers, through its assistance services, research and advocacy.⁣

The RCGD Global Design Contest 2020 in partnership with TENCEL™ Luxe will not only be creating opportunity for the global design community, but the campaign will be directing a percentage of funds raised towards Awaj Foundation to deliver the assistance program. ⁣

Can you recognise who this campaign ambassador is? This is Lakeith Stanfield who was one of our amazing ambassadors for #Oscars2018. He wore an ethical tuxedo by Ermenegildo Zegna Couture, made from a navy Tussah Silk. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣🍃⁣
Typically gathered in the jungle from cocoons of wild silk moths, the silk is found in a natural state with minimal human intervention and very little invasion to the process. For this reason, unlike a silk yarn produced with greater mechanical interventions, the yarn of Tussah silk features irregularities creating a rich texture, typical of wild, natural breeding. ⁣⁣⁣

This campaign represented two pivotal moments on the red carpet - showcasing sustainable men's wear (which is a topic that often falls off the radar), and learning more about the innovative ways of extracting silk, and how it can complement eco-couture garments.
