How to Dye with Avocado Pits or Skins 🌸⠀

1. Pretreat the fabric using either a protein binder or metal salt mordant. ✨Don’t skip this step✨ Proper pretreatment is vital to achieving strong, long lasting colors. I cover multiple pretreatment methods in my online course if you’d like to learn more. I also have a detailed YouTube tutorial on pretreating with soy milk. ⠀
2. Cover well cleaned avocado pits or skins with water and heat on low for 1-2 hours. ⠀
3. Allow the dye to rest and oxidize for a few hours. This step is optional but it will yield stronger pinks.⠀
4. Remove pits from the dye. ⠀
5. Soak pretreated fabric in water for at least 20 minutes then wring out excess water.⠀
6. Add fiber to the dye and keep it moving for the first few minutes. Stirring in the beginning, as the dye is finding the fabric, helps with even color uptake.⠀
7. Heat on low for around thirty minutes - stirring occasionally. ⠀
8. Remove the fabric from the dye and rinse well. ⠀
9. Consider watering your plants or making a lake pigment with the remaining dye. ⠀
10. Enjoy!⠀

Here are some additional tips that may help you along the way:⠀
🌸 Hass avocados create the pinkest dye⠀
🌸 Either pits or skins can be used but pits tend to make a pinker dye⠀
🌸 Keep the heat low for the truest pinks - higher heat will shift the dye to a peachier color⠀
🌸 Clean the pits or skins well before using ⠀
🌸 A small amount of alkalinity (such as baking soda) can be used to shift the dye to pinker tones⠀
🌸 Pits and skins can be used fresh, frozen or dried but fresh and frozen give the brightest pinks.

RCGD Global and Fashion Takes Action partner to deliver accessible digital video series to introduce sustainable fashion to educators across communities. @rcgdisglobal has been pioneering in the space of sustainable design solutions since 2009 with an extensive relationship with educational institutions across the USA, Asia and Europe. @fashiontakesaction has been educating students in grades 4-12 since 2014 with its @myclothesmyworld program, and their series of workshops have been delivered to over 30,000 students across Canada.

Now, together, they are joining forces, offering teachers and students, and anyone with a curiosity about the subject, free access to education in the sustainability realm. The educational capsule consists of six short videos of five to seven minutes in length that provide an overview of the key sustainability issues in the fashion industry and how to address them.

Did you know how many stages there are to create fashion?

The clothing industry is a complex one, with numerous stages involved in transforming raw materials into finished garments. The first step is the spinning of textile fibers into yarn, which can be done by hand or machine. Next, the yarn is woven or knitted into fabric, again using either traditional methods or modern technology. Once the fabric is prepared, it must then be cut and sewn into its final form. This process often requires multiple steps and a great deal of skill, as fabric can be very difficult to work with. Finally, the garment is finished with a variety of treatments, such as washing, drying, and pressing. Only then is it ready to be worn.

As this overview demonstrates, there is a lot that goes into producing clothes. Every garment is the result of a complex and multi-step process. We take resources and use water and chemicals all along the way which is why the way we are producing and the way we are consuming has to change!

That study, released in May 2022 by the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Studies (CISS), asserts that a living wage (as opposed to a wage below the poverty level), is not only good for workers but benefits businesses as well.

Fair wages are an important cog in the machinery of sustainability. Good working conditions and attention to the common labourer’s concerns create an environment in which the workers and their community not only understand the process of sustainability but feel they are important to that effort.

Sustainability is an important consideration in all aspects of life, and that includes fashion. The clothing industry has a big impact on the environment, and here are four of the key issues to be aware of: water consumption and contamination, energy emissions, chemical usage, and waste creation.

Water is used extensively in the production of clothing, and it's not just the water used to grow raw materials like cotton. A huge amount of water is also needed for fabric production, dyeing and printing processes, and finishing treatments. And then there's the water we use when we wash our clothes at home. It's estimated that the average person uses around 40 gallons of water per week just doing laundry!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Energy emissions are another big issue in fashion. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon are made from petroleum products, so their production creates a lot of greenhouse gases. And the process of washing, drying and ironing our clothes uses a lot of energy too.

Chemical usage is another environmental concern associated with fashion. Pesticides and fertilizers are used in the cultivation of raw materials like cotton, and a wide range of chemicals are used in fabric production processes. These chemicals can end up in our waterways, where they can damage ecosystems.

Finally, there's the issue of waste creation. Every year, millions of tons of textiles are sent to landfill or incinerated. This is a huge waste of resources, as well as being bad for the environment. So next time you're shopping for new clothes, keep sustainability in mind!

3D printing technology is being heralded as a game

3D printing technology is being heralded as a game-changer for the fashion industry. By allowing clothes to be produced on-demand, 3D printing could reduce waste and lead to a more sustainable industry.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, a university professor has argued that introducing 3D printing technology in clothing manufacturing will not resolve current power dynamics weighted in favour of retailers. In an article for The Conversation, Professor Rebecca Earle argues that 3D printing technology is likely to increase the speed and flexibility of garment production, meaning that retailers can respond even more quickly to changing trends. This, in turn, will put even more pressure on garment workers, who are already working in conditions of precarity and exploitation. While 3D printing technology has the potential to transform the fashion industry, it is clear that any such transformation is likely to benefit retailers and brands rather than the workers who are essential to the industry.
