RCGD Global Opens 2015 Oscars Design Competition To Kickoff This Year’s Campaign

Los Angeles, CA, December 15, 2014 – Today Suzy Amis Cameron, founder of Red Carpet

Green Dress, opens this year’s campaign by inviting designers to enter the competition for a

chance to see their design worn on the red carpet at the 87th Annual Academy Awards® on

Sunday, February 22, 2015.

“The opening of the competition is always exciting, because it’s incredible to see the

different ways these promising designers approach the project and express themselves

through design,” explains Amis Cameron. “I’m also happy to announce we’ll be continuing

with the menswear category that we introduced last year.”

Designers who wish to enter must submit a sketch of a red carpet gown or a tuxedo, along

with an explanation of how their design would be made sustainably. Two winners will be

chosen and paired with established designers who will mentor them through the creation of

their designs. Last year, Alice Elia, a fashion student at ESMOD-ISEM in Paris, was the victor of the

women’s category and was thrilled to watch actress Olga Kurylenko saunter down the red

carpet in her design. The men’s category was won by New Zealand-based designer

Jomnarn Dul whose design was based on a silhouette she had created for a collaboration

between H Brothers, one of New Zealand’s most iconic menswear brands, and

EKOCYCLE, a partnership between and The Coca-Cola Company.

Kurylenko’s gown was made from 100% GOTS certified organic peace silk and 100%

GOTS certified organic silk. It was first hand-dyed with Sappanwood – a legume which

produces a reddish-colored dye and is sustainable due to its fast growth rate – then

overdyed with madder root to give it a deeper shade of red. Her shoes were a first time

collaboration between RCGD Global and Beyond Skin, a UK-based ethical

footware and fashion label. The vegan, faux suede, metallic-trimmed shoes are made from

Dinamica, a durable material made in Italy from 100% recycled bottle tops.

Lutz’s tuxedo jacket was 45% certified silk and 55% rPET (from post-waste recycled

plastic bottles). His pants were made of hemp and plant-dyed with logwood. The

waistcoat was made of hemp and 100-year-old spitalfield silk (from French Huguenots

who begin silk trade in London), and was dyed with marigold flowers. The tuxedo was

made under the mentorship of Prophetik designer Jeff Garner.

RCGD Global raises funds for MUSE School CA, the single beneficiary of the

campaign. MUSE School CA is a non-profit, educational organization in Calabasas,

California, dedicated to inspiring and preparing young people to live consciously with

themselves, one another, and the planet. The deadline for entries is Monday, January 5th

2015 and the entry fee is $30 – proceeds raised through the campaign go towards

sponsoring children to attend MUSE School CA and MUSE Global.

Suzy Amis Cameron is the mind behind RCGD Global – the initiative she launched in 2009 to promote sustainable red carpet fashion – and now it looks like the author and campaigner will turn designer herself.

“I really want to find clothes that I can wear and am also at a place of desperation that is driving towards research and developing my own clothing line,” confesses Cameron who, until now, has worked more in an ambassadorial role herself, seeking out new design talent in the process. “When I founded RCGD Global, my aim was to wear one sustainable gown to the Avatar premier and make an important statement.” And the way she did that was by inviting budding designers to create something for her. The project has come on leaps and bounds since then – Samata Angel, pictured with Cameron here, was the winner in 2011 and now heads up the campaign along with Cameron.

“We wanted to give the winning designer the opportunity to work with an established fashion house to deliver a gown that would hold its own on the red carpet at the Oscars. Vivienne Westwood was a dream to work with and had a huge interest in sourcing sustainable fabrics,” she recollects.

Up next year is the addition of a menswear element to the competition, as well as a series of auctions.

Well….the couture team at Vivienne Westwood worked tirelessly on this dress, putting in well over 120 hours. The dress was constructed in their gorgeous Battersea office. The hand embroidery by the Royal School Of Needlework was a huge part of the sustainable story – emphasising the importance of hand crafts over fast machine led fashion. The embroidery took over 500 hrs with a team of 22 including students working on the dress. Hand embroidery is an old art form which is very applicable to the modern fashion industry. One small embroidered ‘lava piece’ took up to 7 hours!

Our fabric is a GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic silk crepe de chine. It was dyed using chamomille and golden rod. No chemicals were used and our colouring process has just received the Greenpeace international ‘Detox Fashion’ stamp of approval. Check out this fantastic article here about why they chose to support our dress!
Elements to the dress like zips and threads were reclaimed zips and we used an organic cotton thread for the embroidery.  The dress was embroidered with old vintage beads from the 20’s through to the 60’s and Westwood have also incorporated Chocolate wrappers. The embroidery was done by the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace and took over 700 hours! All of the embroidery can be taken off afterwards with relative ease.  Our beads are vintage – bringing in the ‘old’ concept – re-using not throwing away. All the beads are  glass  not plastic.

We can not wait…can you?!

We are so excited for you to see the stunning dress that has been created for Naomie Harris to wear at the Oscars this year! Our dress has worked on by the talented team at the Royal School of Needlework and is simply, well…breath-taking. It has been designed by the talented Michael Badger – under the guidance of the Couture team at Vivienne Westwood. It is truly incredible and we cannot wait for you to see it and support us along the red carpet journey.

It is also one seriously green dress…dyed with plants known for their therapeutic properties – (can you guess which ones?) made from a fabric which is an organic GOTS certified organic silk Crepe De Chine and featuring some unique and beautiful vintage and recycled elements. Intrigued? You should be!

We have some great efforts running alongside the dress to support our project and to raise funds for the MUSE School, CA including this awesome Charity Buzz auction of goodies from the likes of Vivienne Westwood, James Cameron and Stella McCartney, across to a stunning eco-necklace we will be giving away next week through our social media here and here. We have our winner! Thank you to everyone who entered

Dear All,

We are excited to announce that we have our winner for this year! Michael Badger, who is currently working toward a B.F.A. in fashion design at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, Georgia is the unanimous winner. Badger was the only entrant that all four of the judges, Suzy Amis Cameron – Founder of RCGD Global and co-founder of the MUSE School Ca, Zem Joaquin – Founder & CEO of, Lewis Perkins – Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute and Dame Vivienne Westwood, all agreed on.

We understand that those of you who entered and did not win will be disappointed – please rest assured that the judges had an extremely tough struggle selecting the winner this year and it is not a job I envy them for. The calibre was so high this year – it just keeps getting better and it took them weeks to decide who the winner was. Each judge submitted a top 10 list of entrants and these were cross-populated. Michael was the only shared selection by all four judges making him the winner.

To all of the talented designers who entered this year please keep in touch with me about your exploits and stay tuned to the website as we will have some really fun projects launching this year which I would love to see you included in.

Many thanks for your support and for sharing your talents with us at RCGD Global!

In the meanwhile please do let me know if you have any other enquiries on or connect with me on twitter here:   @samataangel.

Deadline Extension out of respect for those affected by Sandy – 15th November 2012

Dear Entrants,
To accommodate designers in the USA, Cuba and Haiti who have been struggling, due to Hurricane Sandy, to finish materials by November 5th, Suzy Amis Cameron, RCGD Global Founder, and Samata Angel, Global Campaign Director, have decided to extend the deadline for all potential entrants to Thursday, November 15th.
Just off the heels of this devastating hurricane that was fueled by circumstances relating to climate change, there couldn’t be a more fitting time to amp up the conversation of sustainability as it relates to fashion.  “We want to ensure that everyone interested in entering this competition, where ever they are based, is given a fair chance at this fantastic, life-changing opportunity to make a statement on behalf of sustainable fashion,” proclaims Amis Cameron.  “And our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.”
We hope you understand why we re doing this and support this decision.
Many thanks,
RCGD Global

Will it be you who’s going to work alongside of the legendary Vivienne Westwood? :)

The prestigious designer and long time environmental advocate Vivienne Westwood will be this year’s judge for the RCGD Global challenge. Westwood will participate in the process of choosing the winning designer. The winner will get to work with Westwood directly on the creation of the gown. The gown will be worn by a still unannounced actress at the 2013 Oscars.

“We are at war with our environment and our future is unsteady,” proclaims Westwood. “In order for a shift to occur we must make informed decisions to live more harmoniously with our planet, and I’ve joined RCGD Global because its message aligns with this idea.”

The contest closes November 5th, so you still have time to submit your design. Stay tuned to find out which celebrity will strut the winning design on the red carpet!

Need another reason to enter Suzy Amis Cameron’s “RCGD Global” competition? The annual talent search has recruited no less than Vivienne Westwood as a judge and mentor. The legendary British designer—and born-again “climate revolutionary”—will not only help choose a winning designer, but she’ll also work with him or her to bring the design to life for an as-yet-unnamed actress at the 85th Academy Awards in 2013. “We are at war with our environment and our future is unsteady,” Westwood says in a statement. “In order for a shift to occur we must make informed decisions to live more harmoniously with our planet, and I’ve joined RCGD Global because its message aligns with this idea.”

Amis Cameron launched the competition in 2010 to find a gown to wear to the 82nd Academy Awards, where her husband, Avatar director James Cameron, was up for nine awards. Chief among her requirements was a look that combined both style and sustainability. Read more
