What does transparency mean to us? What does it me What does transparency mean to us? What does it mean to you?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Transparency in sustainability is a bit of a buzzword these days. It's often thrown around in conversations about environmental responsibility and corporate social responsibility. But what does it actually mean? At its core, transparency is about being open and honest about the impact of our actions. It means providing clear and accurate information about the ways in which we are working to reduce our environmental footprint or improve conditions for workers in our supply chains.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Transparency empowers stakeholders to hold us accountable for our actions and encourages us to continually strive for improvement. So, when we talk about transparency in sustainability, we're really talking about building trust with our customers, investors, and other stakeholders by being open and honest about our sustainability efforts.

When we think of workers enduring poor conditions When we think of workers enduring poor conditions and low wages in the fashion industry, fast fashion brands often come to mind. However, it’s important to recognize that the issue extends beyond these mass-market retailers. Luxury fashion brands, known for their high-quality materials and exquisite craftsmanship, are not exempt from this reality.

The truth is that many luxury brands outsource their production to factories where workers endure similar poor conditions and receive meager wages. These factories, tucked away from the glamorous facade of luxury fashion, often operate in developing countries where labor regulations may be less stringent.

Let’s break down the illusion and challenge the prevailing perception that only fast fashion workers suffer in poor conditions with low wages. Find out the secret lives of clothes, check the link in bio for our educational series videos with @fashiontakesaction.

It’s crucial to scrutinize fast fashion companies’ actions beyond their sustainability-focused marketing. Are they making substantial changes throughout their supply chains, reducing their carbon footprint, and minimizing waste? Or are they simply repackaging products with a thin veil of eco-consciousness? ♻️

Have you ever heard of the term "carbon footprint" Have you ever heard of the term "carbon footprint"? It basically refers to the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that are released into the atmosphere as a result of our daily activities - from driving a car to cooking dinner. But have you ever considered the carbon footprint of your closet? Yes, you read that right! The clothes we wear and the brands we choose to buy from have a significant impact on our planet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
From the manufacturing process to packaging and shipping, every aspect of the fashion industry contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Brands and citizens alike share the responsibility in reducing this footprint. Brands can make changes such as using sustainable materials, implementing ethical manufacturing processes, and reducing waste. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, citizens also have a role to play in this by choosing to support these sustainable brands alongside practicing mindful consumption habits, such as buying secondhand or taking better care of the clothes we have. By working together, and using our voices to call for change, we can help reduce the carbon footprint of our closets and make a positive impact on our planet.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Repost • @mayasideas Bringing circularity to the Repost • @mayasideas Bringing circularity to the #MetGala!! This custom @coachtopia gown was created from leftover chiffon materials from the past runway shows and was dyed using dandelion flowers. The ruffles were embroidered with scrap vintage lace elements and the sequins are actually made from discarded bike tire tubes and aluminum soda cans. The trim was made from discarded VHS tapes (yes!! you can make trim from VHS tapes!! 😳) acquired from rummage sales and secondhand shops, and the large flower applique was constructed from discarded plastic packaging waste along with scraps of antique lace. The jewelry is all vintage, and one of the coolest parts of the look is the Wavy Dinky bag — The @coach team repurposed literal “trash” from Met Museum (ticket stubs and maps, street vendor napkins, plastic water bottles and more) to make the gorgeous flower details. I’ve been nerding out about this whole thing for weeks and I’m so excited to be able to finally share it with everyone.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I want to show the world that circularity and sustainability must be normalized and take center stage in the fashion industry and in our culture, especially pop culture!! You don’t have to sacrifice creativity and style in the process. In fact I believe that sustainable design processes enable even more creativity, ingenuity, and innovation. Fashion is deeply connected with climate justice and the future of our planet and I’m excited to use this opportunity to educate and reshape the industry. ❤️🖤🤍 Huge thank you to the amazing @stuartvevers and @coach team who brought this to life, I have so much gratitude and it was a pleasure to collaborate!

Sustainable fashion has the potential to be an inc Sustainable fashion has the potential to be an incredibly powerful agent for change. Making sustainable fashion part of fashion education curriculums can help shift attitudes and practices on a global scale. ⠀
⠀
RCGD Global recently partnered with @fashiontakesaction to deliver accessible digital video series to introduce sustainable fashion to educators and across communities to support sustainability being embedded in every lesson, from teaching students the raw materials available and production methods to promoting ethical outreach campaigns. ⠀
⠀
With this in mind, Liandra van Staden, Lecturer at the Design Academy of Fashion urges for a higher level of responsibility — to ask where items come from, to question what works best environmentally, and to remind students that we are all affected by fast fashion. Similarly, Michelle Taylor, a master instructor in the Fashion Design Program at the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, posits that educating students on the potential impacts of fast fashion will help ensure its longevity. ⠀
⠀
Without an understanding of sustainable practices and the acknowledgement that we all play our part in the climate crisis, there is an urgency for the education system — specifically within fashion and design — to drive change now more than ever before. ⠀

If you have any form of social media, you probably If you have any form of social media, you probably know the 2023 Met Gala took place on May 1st. The theme was Karl Lagerfeld, who was a very controversial fashion designer who worked for Balmain, Patou, and Chloé before famously becoming the creative director at Chanel before he passed in 2019. This was predicted to be one of the most sustainable Met Gala’s to date because it was expected to showcase a lot of vintage pieces from Karl Lagerfeld’s repertoire. While there were many sustainable looks featured, we hope in the future there is an overall “required” sustainable dress code! Have you ever thought about the impact of overcons Have you ever thought about the impact of overconsumption? It's something that's easy to overlook in our consumer-driven society, but it's becoming more important than ever to consider. Overconsumption not only puts a strain on our planet's resources, but it also has negative effects on our health and well-being. From increasing rates of pollution and waste to contributing to the rise of mental and physical health crisis, it's clear that we need to start taking a step back and re-evaluating our relationship with consumption. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In a world where we are constantly bombarded with advertisements and messages telling us to consume more, it can be challenging to start thinking more thoughtfully about our own consumption habits. The best mindset to begin with is curiosity. Ask yourself questions like, "Do I really need this?" or "What impact will this purchase have on the environment?" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

By approaching your purchasing decisions with a sense of curiosity, you can explore why you make certain choices and identify areas where you may want to make adjustments. Additionally, it's important to remember that becoming a more thoughtful consumer is a journey, not an overnight transformation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, be patient with yourself and take small steps towards a more mindful approach to consumption.
